Clay teaches a suite of creative writing courses designed specifically for community colleges and other not-for-profit organisations. These courses include:
Clay Thistleton’s Creative Writing: Bite Size (fictional autobiography), Clay Thistleton’s Creative Writing: Introduction (poetry, prose fiction, drama and editing) and Clay Thistleton’s Creative Writing: Poetry.
Four collaboratively-edited anthologies of writings have resulted from these courses: Whatever Floats (gspotpublishing.com, 2009), wild wRites (wild wRites collective, 2010), Ebb & Flourish (Donaldson Theobald Thistleton with the assistance of Flourish Australia, 2016) and Seeing Nothing Beyond the Immediate (La Terzina del Diavolo, 2020, available here).

Between 2001 and 2012 Clay taught in what was the School of English Literatures, Philosophy and Languages at the University of Wollongong’s Bega Campus. Subjects taught included:
Society and Representation, Introduction to Literature and Screen Studies, Introduction to Canadian Literature, Science Fantasy Literature, Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Nineteenth-Century Australian Literary Culture, Twentieth-Century Australian Literary Culture, Australian Children’s Literature, The Literature of ‘Australia Fair’.
Additionally, in 2009, Clay was a foundation member of the Campus’ Bega Education Centre Colloquy of Research Scholars (BECCORS).
